When you search the internet for “international shipping prices”, you’re likely to come across complicated online calculators that end up costing you a lot more than you expected. The confusion peaks when you arrive at the courier’s office and they tell you that a 5-kilo package… is charged as 15 kilos!
In this article, Spourgitis Shipping clarifies the situation, explaining how international shipping prices are calculated and how you can avoid the biggest “pitfalls”.
The Biggest Pitfall: Volumetric Weight
The most common pricing shock is the Volumetric Weight rule. Shipping companies (air and road) don’t just charge based on how heavy a package is, but also on how it takes up space on the truck or plane.
How it works: If you ship a quilt (very light, but huge in volume) that weighs 3 kilos in a large box, the courier company will use the formula (Length x Width x Height / 5000). The result might be 15 kilos.
💡 The rule: Always pay whichever number is larger: the Actual Weight (on the scale) or the Volumetric.
Our Tip: Always use the smallest box that will fit your items. Cut off the edges of the cardboard box if there is empty air inside, because you are literally “paying for air”.
Hidden Charges in Multinational Couriers
When comparing prices, pay attention to the “fine print”. Many companies give a Base Rate, but at the final checkout they add:
- Fuel Surcharge: It can add from 15% to 30% to the final price, depending on the month!
- Remote Area Surcharge: If the recipient does not live in a central city in Germany or England, there may be a “penalty” of 20-30€.
The “Flat-Rate” Transparency of the Transport Sparrow
For decades, the philosophy of Transport Sparrow has been absolute transparency. We do not want our customers to feel “cheated” at the checkout.
- Road Economy (Groupage): Because we fill our own trucks to Europe and England, we offer you prices up to 70% cheaper than air couriers.
- Free Customs Clearance (In-House): We have long-standing partnerships with customs brokers that allow us to manage incoming or outgoing shipments to and from countries outside the European Union with the lowest possible customs clearance costs. We do not charge you “hidden fees” of intermediaries for shipments to the United Kingdom (post-Brexit).
- Clear Costing: You tell us dimensions, weight and ZIP code, and we give you the Final Door-to-Door Price. Nothing more.
